Is singing on key required to be successful?
Maybe not. Musical audiences generally expect singers to sing on key, but sometimes attitude or integrity of an idea is more important to the audience than pitch. As a performer, you need to know what you’re delivering to your audience. Ask Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Cat Powers, or Lou Reed.
Science says that approximately 4% of the population is completely tone deaf. The scientific term is congenital amusia. That’s a lot of people. Maybe your audience cares more about rhythm or a story well told?
While perfect pitch isn’t a priority for some styles of music, it’s more important in others. Most pop, rock, folk, jazz, and country singers are aiming to sing on key and some are indeed very skilled. Others, not so much.
Modern technology has changed the way audiences listen to music. Many of today’s popular records include some amount of pitch correction on vocals. As a result, audiences have become accustomed to hearing vocals that are exactly in tune.
The same is true on stage. A few stage performers of the past and present have used lip-syncing to get by, and some are now singing through live pitch correction systems. This technology is getting more refined and difficult to detect every year.
Classical and operatic singers are expected to be able to sing on key without artificial enhancement, and this is unlikely to change. Folk and jazz singers and audiences typically reject pitch correction. A jazz vocal artist might use microtonal drift in a musical statement. For a folk singer, performing off pitch could be received as authentic, even if the drift is deliberate.
